A Weekend of Firsts

My BFF Jennifer flew in for the weekend from Cave Creek, AZ, just to see Shane in an agility show. We had talked about meeting up in McKinney the next time she visited her family, but I wasn't planning on being up there for a while. I pulled Woody from the show so we could have more time to play in Austin. This would be Jennifer's very first agility show.

After I picked Jennifer up at the airport, we drove over to the fairgrounds to set up my stuff. We thought for a minute about staying to watch the excellent dogs, but the shopping bug bit us and off we went to the Domain, which was Jennifer's first time. Later that evening, we went to Guero's to hear Frank play with Too Blue, which was the first time for both Jennifer and me. Really glad I pulled Woody from the show. We needed to sleep in after that.

Saturday, we headed for the show around noon, which I was not used to at all. I felt a little out of it getting there so late. Shane's first run in Open was the first run for us. I missed having Woody to run in the morning to get the heebie-jeebies out and it showed, because we were a mess: 2 refusals, 3 wrong courses, 2 eliminations, and 1 second over time. Brother. A few people commented on how good we looked, which threw me for a loop until someone told me they didn't know he was going over the wrong jumps. Hmm. Jennifer used our new video camera for the first time so the entire mess is digitized.

The second run of the day was Nov B STD, and we finally got a Q, our first one! As we were running, I got more nervous as he was doing well. When he got the contact on the dog walk, I lost concentration and didn't follow through on the last jump, so he missed it. The crowd moaned. I was so touched that some people actually stayed over to watch Shane run. Ragni got the run on video for me. What a sweetheart.

Sunday, Shane almost got a Q in Open JWW, but knocked the next to the last bar. Not too bad. Our STD run was a mess, although it didn't look too bad when I watched it later. The course was very easy and he just got too nuts on me. Jumped off the table at a barking dog, which was the first time that happened. Missed the dog walk contact and the last jump.
All-in-all, it was a great weekend. Frank drove the new Lexus hybrid SUV for the first time at the Taste of Lexus event, which was right next door to the show. We all registered and got a free lunch. After the show, Jennifer and I changed our clothes in the bathroom, which was my first time doing that at a filthy show barn, went to the Roaring Fork for dinner, and then I dropped her off at the airport. Just the best show weekend ever.
